The Diamonbacks won the Greinke sweepstakes because of there willingness to go six years. His deal will be worth $206 million.
Greinke had nothing short of a historic year in 2015. He had a 1.66 era in 222 innings. He was runner up to Jake Arrieta for the American League Cy Young Award.
Although the Diamonbacks were 79-83, most think they are not far away from competing. With Paul Goldschmidt in the middle of their lineup and the best defense in baseball, a legitimate ace may put them over the top. It could, however, also be a huge risk. The Diamondbacks payroll last year was $88, and they will be paying Greinke $31 million a season.
The Dodgers are now obviously in a little bit of trouble. The have another division competitor, and a shallow starting rotation. I expect they may consider pursuing Johnny Cueto. There are plenty of starters on the market, but the Dodgers relied heavily on a strong 1-2 last season.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have made their mark.
