San Diego scouted Andrus and may have interest in acquiring him this winter. It's no secret that the Padres are aggressively pursuing an upgrade at shortstop this offseason, as they have already expressed interest in Andrelton Simmons and Ian Desmond. Another name to watch for the Padres, according to sources, is Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus.
There was a huge hole is the San Diego Padres strategy last winter. They severely discounted the importance of defense, especially in a big ballpark like Petco.  It would make sense for the Padres to upgrade defensively.  Unfortunately, Elvis Andrus is not the way to do that. Andrus's skills have declined significantly, which is probably why the Rangers are shopping him.  This decline was marked with -1 defensive runs saved in 2015.  Thankfully for him, he plays next the best defensive third baseman in the game in Adrian Beltre. Also, transitioning from Globe Life Park to Petco Park would reduce his numbers offensively. In the end, however, the Padres are just looking for value, and Andrus is probably a slight upgrade over Alexi Amarista.
