The St. Louis Cardinals have signed free agent starting pitcher Mike Leake, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Mike Leake deal is for 5 years, $80 million.

The St. Louis Cardinals had previously missed on resigning free agents John Lackey and Jason Heyward. Mike Leake, however, might be a better value.

Leake is generally a league average pitcher, but has steadily increased velocity and resisted injury. In 2015 Leake had a 3.70 era in 192 innings.  His strikeouts per nine innings rose as high as 6.9 in 2014, although he is primarily a ground ball pitcher.

Leake provides the Cardinals with solid rotation depth.
