The St. Louis Cardinals had previously missed on resigning free agents John Lackey and Jason Heyward. Mike Leake, however, might be a better value.
Leake is generally a league average pitcher, but has steadily increased velocity and resisted injury. In 2015 Leake had a 3.70 era in 192 innings. His strikeouts per nine innings rose as high as 6.9 in 2014, although he is primarily a ground ball pitcher.
Leake provides the Cardinals with solid rotation depth.
