The deal includes vesting options for 2017 and 2018.
Hisashi Iwakuma‘s agreement with the Dodgers recently fell through due do an issue with his physical. It appears that the Dodgers had long term concern about Iwakuma.
The Mariners starting rotation will be much deeper with Iwakuma. When healthy, Iwakuma is as consistent as it gets with a career 3.17 era and only 1.9 walks per nine innings. They can now enjoy the addition of Wade Miley, rather than as an Iwakuma replacement.
The Dodgers are now is a really tough spot as the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants rotations have drastically improved. With the Iwakuma and Chapman deals falling through, the Dodgers will clearly be on the prowl for pitching upgrades.
