Athletics Trade Jesse Chavez to Blue Jays
The right-hander goes to Toronto in a deal for Liam Hendriks. The Blue Jays have acquired right-hander Jesse Chavez from the Athletics in a deal that will send Liam Hendriks to Oakland, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. The deal is a one-for-one swap. Chavez, 32, has drawn significant trade interest from many teams this offseason and was made expendable by Oakland's recent signing of left-hander Rich Hill. Toronto has been known to be looking to add starting help this winter, and will add Chavez just a week after re-signing Marco Estrada to a 2-year deal. The Toronto Blue Jays address their potential issue with starting pitching depth (if they fail to re-sign David Price), with the acquisition of Jesse Chavez. Chavez was highly effective for the Oakland Athletics in 2014 with a 3.45 era in 146 innings. He dropped off in 2015, however, with a 4.18 era. He did still have a 3.89 FIP (fielding independent pitching), so he may have been a bit unlucky. His numbers will also likely tick up at Rodgers Center. The Blue Jays give up a solid reliever in Liam Hendricks. Hendricks had a 2.92 era in 65 innings pitched. Combined with the addition of Rich Hill, the A's seem to have solidified their bullpen.
