2016 Fantasy Baseball Draft Advice: Starting Pitcher

1. Clayton Kershaw – Los Angeles Dodgers

2015 Stats: ERA 2.13 | IP 232.2 | H 163 | BB 42 | SO 301 | FIP 1.99 | WHIP 0.881 | BB/9 1.6 | SO/9 11.6 | BA Against .194

Clayton Kershaw of course leads our fantasy baseball starting pitcher rankings following his 301 strike out and 2.13 era performance in 2015.  Incredible that those numbers only got him third in Cy Young voting.  No reason to expect any different in 2016.

2. Jake Arrieta – Chicago Cubs

2015 Stats: ERA 1.77 | IP 229.0 | H 150 | BB 48 | SO 236 | FIP 2.35 | WHIP 0.865 | BB/9 1.9 | SO/9 9.3 | BA Against .185

The National League Cy Young Award winner continued his career makeover in 2015, and we expect the same in 2016. Although, we do think Greinke should have won the award.

3. Max Scherzer – Washington Nationals

2015 Stats: ERA 2.79 | IP 228.2 | H 176 | BB 34 | SO 276 | FIP 2.77 | WHIP 0.918 | BB/9 1.3 | SO/9 10.9 | BA Against .208

Other than Kershaw, it doesn’t get better than Scherzer in terms matching efficiency with strikeouts.  The first year of a new contract often comes with jitters. That was far from the case with Scherzer.

4. Zack Greinke – Arizona Diamondbacks

2015 Stats: ERA 1.66 | IP 222.2 | H 148 | BB 40 | SO 200 | FIP 2.79 | WHIP 0.844 | BB/9 1.6 | SO/9 8.1 | BA Against .187

A couple of minor concerns for Greinke in 2016. 1) He’s moving to a hitters ballpark.  2) His FIP was nearly unchanged from 2014 to 2015.  With that we expect a slight regression, but still great numbers.

5. Chris Sale – Chicago White Sox

2015 Stats: ERA 3.41 | IP 208.2 | H 185 | BB 42 | SO 274 | FIP 2.73 | WHIP 1.088 | BB/9 1.8 | SO/9 11.8 | BA Against .233

We have to think that funky delivery of Chris Sale’s will catch up to him eventually.  Until then, he’s a good as it gets.  It might be prudent to show some restraint on Sale in your draft.

6. Jose Fernandez – Miami Marlins

2015 Stats: ERA 2.92 | IP 64.2 | H 61 | BB 14 | SO 79 | FIP 2.24 | WHIP 1.160 | BB/9 1.9 | SO/9 11.0 | BA Against .249

Jose Fernandez started right where he left off following his Tommy John surgery.  There is little reason to be concerned.  The Marlins may restrict his innings, but not significantly given that he threw 64 innings in 2015.

7. Dallas Keuchel – Houston Astros

2015 Stats: ERA 2.48 | IP 232.0 | H 185 | BB 51 | SO 216 | FIP 2.91 | WHIP 1.017 | BB/9 2.0 | SO/9 8.4 | BA Against .217

The American League Cy Young award winner was remarkable in 2015.  The only difference between Dallas Keuchel and the above names, is he doesn’t strike out as many hitters.  He did, however, up his K/9 to 8.4 in 2015.

8. Jacob Degrom – New York Mets

2015 Stats: ERA 2.54 | IP 191.0 | H 149 | BB 38 | SO 205 | FIP 2.70 | WHIP 0.979 | BB/9 1.8 | SO/9 9.7 | BA Against .215

You could only draft Mets pitchers and have a great fantasy staff.  Jacob Degrom leads that elite rotation and should up his innings total in 2016.

9. Madison Bumgarner – San Francisco Giants

2015 Stats: ERA 2.93 | IP 218.1 | H 181 | BB 39 | SO 234 | FIP 2.87 | WHIP 1.008 | BB/9 1.6 | SO/9 9.6 | BA Against .222

Although he didn’t make the headlines he did in 2014, Madison Bumgarner was his old self in 2015.  In fact, he has a career high strikeout total.  One of the safest picks available.

10. David Price – Boston Red Sox

2015 Stats: ERA 2.30 | IP 220.1 | H 190 | BB 47 | SO 225 | FIP 2.78 | WHIP 1.009 | BB/9 1.9 | SO/9 10.5 | BA Against .230

Many would have David Price ranked higher, but his high innings totals the last two seasons (between regular and post season), concerns us a bit.  Overall, however, he should be a solid fantasy ace.
