Fantasy Baseball Draft Advice: Short Stop

Short stop is a shallow position and should be a priority in your draft. After Corey Seager, the talent level really drops off. In an auction draft, spending big on Carlos Correa is not the worst option. Whatever your strategy, don’t wait too long.

1. Carlos Correa – Houston Astros

2015 Stats: AB 387 | R 52 | H 108 | 2B 22 | 3B 1 | HR 22 | RBI 68 | SB 14 | BB 40 | SO 78 | BA .279 | OBP .345 | SLG .512 | OPS .857 | BAbip .296

At short stop, there is no one close to Carlos Correa in 2016. He is the only elite short stop option, and he should be great.

2. Troy Tulowitzki – Toronto Blue Jays

2015 Stats: AB 486 | R 77 | H 136 | 2B 27 | 3B 0 | HR 17 | RBI 53 | SB 0 | BB 38 | SO 114 | BA .280 | OBP .337 | SLG .440 | OPS .777 | BAbip .291

We put Troy Tulowitzki this high because he had to, but we are very leary. He always struggles with injury, and had a lot of trouble adjusting to the American League. Only draft if he falls.

3. Xander Bogaerts – Boston Red Sox

2015 Stats: AB 613 | R 84 | H 196 | 2B 35 | 3B 3 | HR 7 | RBI 81 | SB 10 | BB 32 | SO 101 | BA .320 | OBP .355 | SLG .421 | OPS .776 | BAbip .372

We are probably higher on Xander Bogaerts than most, but we think he simply fulfilled his potential in 2015. We was a little lucky so his average may be a tad too high, but still a solid pick at short stop.

4. Francisco Lindor – Cleveland Indians

2015 Stats: AB 390 | R 50 | H 122 | 2B 22 | 3B 4 | HR 12 | RBI 51 | SB 12 | BB 27 | SO 69 | BA .313 | OBP .353 | SLG .482 | OPS .835 | BAbip .348

Franciscor Lindor would have been the story, and would have been Rookie of the Year if not for Carlos Correa existing. In a full season Lindor should put up solid numbers in almost every category.

5. Brandon Crawford – San Francisco Giants

2015 Stats: AB 507 | R 65 | H 130 | 2B 33 | 3B 4 | HR 21 | RBI 84 | SB 6 | BB 39 | SO 119 | BA .256 | OBP .321 | SLG .462 | OPS .782 | BAbip .294

Brandon Crawford showed significant improvement in 2015, and became a nice source of extra-base hits. We expect that to continue in 2016, and given the size of his new contract, so do the Giants.

6. Corey Seager – Los Angeles Dodgers

2015 Stats: AB 98 | R 17 | H 33 | 2B 8 | 3B 1 | HR 4 | RBI 17 | SB 2 | BB 14 | SO 19 | BA .337 | OBP .425 | SLG .561 | OPS .986 | BAbip .387

This top prospect was on fire in his first taste of the Major Leagues. Corey Seager should be great eventually, but we think the league will catch up to him in 2016.

7. Ian Desmond – Washington Nationals

2015 Stats: AB 583 | R 69 | H 136 | 2B 27 | 3B 2 | HR 19 | RBI 62 | SB 13 | BB 45 | SO 187 | BA .233 | OBP .290 | SLG .384 | OPS .674 | BAbip .307

This is where short stop gets ugly. Ian Desmond is a decent source of power at the position, but that’s about it.

8. Marcus Semien – Oakland Athletics

2015 Stats: AB 556 | R 60 | H 143 | 2B 23 | 3B 7 | HR 15 | RBI 45 | SB 11 | BB 42 | SO 132 | BA .257 | OBP .310 | SLG .405 | OPS .715 | BAbip .312

Marcus Semien had a great first half of 2015, but the league caught up to him a little in the second half. Given his minor league success, we expect him to continue to show improvement.

9. Jhonny Peralta – St. Louis Cardinals

2015 Stats: AB 579 | R 64 | H 159 | 2B 26 | 3B 1 | HR 17 | RBI 71 | SB 1 | BB 50 | SO 111 | BA .275 | OBP .336 | SLG .411 | OPS .745 | BAbip .311

Johnny Peralta is a solid backup option if you miss out on your other targets. A pick that won’t hurt you.

10. Ketel Marte – Seattle Mariners

2015 Stats: AB 219 | R 25 | H 62 | 2B 14 | 3B 3 | HR 2 | RBI 17 | SB 8 | BB 24 | SO 43 | BA .283 | OBP .351 | SLG .402 | OPS .753 | BAbip .341

Ketel Marte will not be a source of power, but he will likely hit for average, get on base, and steal a few bases. Not bad for a late round pick.

11. Eugenio Suarez – Cincinnati Reds

2015 Stats: AB 372 | R 42 | H 104 | 2B 19 | 3B 2 | HR 13 | RBI 48 | SB 4 | BB 17 | SO 94 | BA .280 | OBP .315 | SLG .446 | OPS .761 | BAbip .341

Eugenio Suarez is a young talent like Ketel Marte, but with the opposite skill set. He does not have a great eye, and no stolen bases, but does have some power.

12. Asdrubal Cabrera – Tampa Bay Rays

2015 Stats: AB 505 | R 66 | H 134 | 2B 28 | 3B 5 | HR 15 | RBI 58 | SB 6 | BB 36 | SO 107 | BA .265 | OBP .315 | SLG .430 | OPS .744 | BAbip .306

All we can say is draft a short stop before your get to this point. If not, Asdrubal Cabrera might not be the worst thing.
