Fantasy Baseball Draft Advice: Second Base

Second base is surprisingly deep this year, but with no real standouts. There will be some real value at this position late in the draft, so we would recommend waiting.

1. Jose Altuve – Houston Astros

2015 Stats: AB 638 | R 86 | H 200 | 2B 40 | 3B 4 | HR 15 | RBI 66 | SB 38 | BB 33 | SO 67 | BA .313 | OBP .353 | SLG .459 | OPS .812 | BAbip .329

Although he keeps defying the laws of physics, Jose Altuve is clearly the best second baseman available. He won’t tally home runs or RBI’s, however, and that may be a factor in your league.

2. Robinson Cano – Seattle Mariners

2015 Stats: AB 624 | R 82 | H 179 | 2B 34 | 3B 1 | HR 21 | RBI 79 | SB 2 | BB 43 | SO 107 | BA .287 | OBP .334 | SLG .446 | OPS .779 | BAbip .316

We have Robinson Cano higher than most. No we are not living in the past, but we do expect him to be back to his old self. He got off to a really slow start in 2015 hitting .251 before the All-Star break. In the second half, however, he hit .331 with 15 home runs.

3. Brian Dozier – Minnesota Twins

2015 Stats: AB 628 | R 101 | H 148 | 2B 39 | 3B 4 | HR 28 | RBI 77 | SB 12 | BB 61 | SO 148 | BA .236 | OBP .307 | SLG .444 | OPS .751 | BAbip .261

Brian Dozier would easily be the top second baseman if his average was higher. Because of his low batting average, however, he is almost always a sleeper.

4. Dee Gordon – Miami Marlins

2015 Stats: AB 615 | R 88 | H 205 | 2B 24 | 3B 8 | HR 4 | RBI 46 | SB 58 | BB 25 | SO 91 | BA .333 | OBP .359 | SLG .418 | OPS .776 | BAbip .383

What sets Dee Gordon apart is of course his speed, which also drives up his batting average. He also continues to show improvement at the plate. We should note, however, that he was extremely lucky in 2015 with a .383 BAbip. Tough player to project, but the speed will still be there.

5. Jason Kipnis – Cleveland Indians

2015 Stats: AB 565 | R 86 | H 171 | 2B 43 | 3B 7 | HR 9 | RBI 52 | SB 12 | BB 57 | SO 107 | BA .303 | OBP .372 | SLG .451 | OPS .823 | BAbip .356

The poor man’s Altuve. Jason Kipnis hits for a lower average, but also has a better eye. His power numbers came mostly in the form of doubles last year, but that could change.

6. Joe Panik – San Francisco Giants

2015 Stats: AB 382 | R 59 | H 119 | 2B 27 | 3B 2 | HR 8 | RBI 37 | SB 3 | BB 38 | SO 42 | BA .312 | OBP .378 | SLG .455 | OPS .833 | BAbip .330

We are high on Joe Panik. While his power numbers are not there yet, they should improve. Even without, his high average and OBP will help your team.

7. Ian Kinsler – Detroit Tigers

2015 Stats: AB 624 | R 94 | H 185 | 2B 35 | 3B 7 | HR 11 | RBI 73 | SB 10 | BB 43 | SO 80 | BA .296 | OBP .342 | SLG .428 | OPS .770 | BAbip .323

Most of Ian Kinsler’s value comes from his position in the lineup. Should that change, run, but it shouldn’t, and it’s rare to find 100 runs a second base.

8. Anthony Rendon – Washington Nationals

2015 Stats: AB 311 | R 43 | H 82 | 2B 16 | 3B 0 | HR 5 | RBI 25 | SB 1 | BB 36 | SO 70 | BA .264 | OBP .344 | SLG .363 | OPS .707 | BAbip .321

Anthony Rendon is an elite second baseman when healthy, but he dealt with a numbers of injuries year. High risk, high reward.

9. Ben Zobrist – Chicago Cubs

2015 Stats: AB 467 | R 76 | H 129 | 2B 36 | 3B 3 | HR 13 | RBI 56 | SB 3 | BB 62 | SO 56 | BA .276 | OBP .354 | SLG .450 | OPS .809 | BAbip .299

Ben Zobrist is our safe pick. He can’t hurt you. Should he finally end up in a hitters park, he may significantly help you.

10. Devon Travis – Toronto Blue Jays

2015 Stats: AB 217 | R 38 | H 66 | 2B 18 | 3B 0 | HR 8 | RBI 35 | SB 3 | BB 18 | SO 43 | BA .304 | OBP .361 | SLG .498 | OPS .859 | BAbip .347

Devon Travis was amazing in 2015 when healthy. If his shoulder cooperates, he’ll be in for a big 2016. But that’s a big “if”.

11. Rougned Odor – Texas Rangers

2015 Stats: AB 426 | R 54 | H 111 | 2B 21 | 3B 9 | HR 16 | RBI 61 | SB 6 | BB 23 | SO 79 | BA .261 | OBP .316 | SLG .465 | OPS .781 | BAbip .283

Other rankings have Rougned Odor higher, but we have some concern about his approach at the plate. Scouting reports may catch up to him in 2016.

12. Neil Walker – New York Mets

2015 Stats: AB 543 | R 67 | H 146 | 2B 32 | 3B 3 | HR 16 | RBI 71 | SB 4 | BB 44 | SO 110 | BA .269 | OBP .328 | SLG .427 | OPS .756 | BAbip .306

Neil Walker is a consistent source of moderate power at the second base position. He also hits in the middle of the Pirate lineup.
