Fantasy Baseball Draft Advice: First Base

As usual, the first base position is deep, even more so this year than last. Your strategy at first base will largely depend on your draft strategy. Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Rizzo, Miguel Cabrera, and Joey Votto are all great early round picks. There are also, however, some great mid round picks. So if you are in an auction draft for instance, and want to load up on second and third tier talent, there are plenty of options at this position.

1. Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks

2015 Stats: AB 567 | R 103 | H 182 | 2B 38 | 3B 2 | HR 33 | RBI 110 | SB 21 | BB 118 | SO 151 | BA .321 | OBP .435 | SLG .570 | OPS 1.005 | BAbip .382

Hard to go wrong with this pick. His BAbip suggest a slight regression, but we wouldn’t worry about it. He’ll even get you 20 Stolen bases for good measure.

2. Anthony Rizzo – Chicago Cubs

2015 Stats: AB 586 | R 94 | H 163 | 2B 38 | 3B 3 | HR 31 | RBI 101 | SB 17 | BB 78 | SO 105 | BA .278 | OBP .387 | SLG .512 | OPS .899 | BAbip .289

That young Cubs lineup will be another year older next year. With that, we expect Rizzo to see a slight uptick in runs and RBI’s.

3. Miguel Cabrera – Detroit Tigers

2015 Stats: AB 429 | R 64 | H 145 | 2B 28 | 3B 1 | HR 18 | RBI 76 | SB 1 | BB 77 | SO 82 | BA .338 | OBP .440 | SLG .534 | OPS .974 | BAbip .384

Miguel Cabrera is on the decline, and still hits .338. A safe pick. You may even be able to get him for some value due to his “down season”…some.

4. Joey Votto – Cincinnati Reds

2015 Stats: AB 545 | R 95 | H 171 | 2B 33 | 3B 2 | HR 29 | RBI 80 | SB 11 | BB 143 | SO 135 | BA .314 | OBP .459 | SLG .541 | OPS 1.000 | BAbip .371

Nice to see Joey Votto back to his old self. If your league doesn’t weigh OBP or walks Votto may not be quite as high. Either way, he is still a great lineup centerpiece.

5. Chris Davis – TBD

2015 Stats: AB 573 | R 100 | H 150 | 2B 31 | 3B 0 | HR 47 | RBI 117 | SB 2 | BB 84 | SO 208 | BA .262 | OBP .361 | SLG .562 | OPS .923 | BAbip .319

Chris Davis will hurt you in strikeouts, and for that some may have him ranked lower. His power numbers, however, will help set your team apart, and his batting average should be average enough to justify drafting him this high.

6. Edwin Encarnacion – Toronto Blue Jays

2015 Stats: AB 528 | R 94 | H 146 | 2B 31 | 3B 3 | HR 39 | RBI 111 | SB 3 | BB 77 | SO 98 | BA .277 | OBP .372 | SLG .557 | OPS .929 | BAbip .267

Edwin Encarnacion always seems to defy our expectations for him. He puts up numbers year after year. Sure the lineup and ballpark help, but he’s still a solid pick.

7. Prince Fielder – Texas Rangers

2015 Stats: AB 613 | R 78 | H 187 | 2B 28 | 3B 0 | HR 23 | RBI 98 | SB 0 | BB 64 | SO 88 | BA .305 | OBP .378 | SLG .463 | OPS .841 | BAbip .323

Many expected Prince Fielder to never be the same following his injury. Wow did he prove them wrong. Prince is a great mid round option at a deep position.

8. Jose Abreu – Chicago White Sox

2015 Stats: AB 613 | R 88 | H 178 | 2B 34 | 3B 3 | HR 30 | RBI 101 | SB 0 | BB 39 | SO 140 | BA .290 | OBP .347 | SLG .502 | OPS .850 | BAbip .333

Jose Abreu has the potential to be at the top of the first base list, but with only two seasons under his belt we need to see more. He will likely be either very overrated or underrated in your draft.

9. Adrian Gonzalez – Los Angeles Dodgers

2015 Stats: AB 571 | R 76 | H 157 | 2B 33 | 3B 0 | HR 28 | RBI 90 | SB 0 | BB 62 | SO 107 | BA .275 | OBP .350 | SLG .480 | OPS .830 | BAbip .294

Although another first baseman in the second half of his career, Adrian Gonzalez is a can’t miss pick. One of those most consistent picks out there.

10. Freddie Freeman – Atlanta Braves

2015 Stats: AB 416 | R 62 | H 115 | 2B 27 | 3B 0 | HR 18 | RBI 66 | SB 3 | BB 56 | SO 98 | BA .276 | OBP .370 | SLG .471 | OPS .841 | BAbip .321

Freddie Freeman is this low for three reasons: 1) He had some health issues last year, 2) his power numbers are mediocre, and 3) the lineup around him stinks. Otherwise, he’s a great pick.

11. Albert Pujols – Los Angeles Angels

2015 Stats: AB 602 | R 85 | H 147 | 2B 22 | 3B 0 | HR 40 | RBI 95 | SB 5 | BB 50 | SO 72 | BA .244 | OBP .307 | SLG .480 | OPS .787 | BAbip .217

I know it’s a crime to put Pujols this low, but he’s really only this high because of his power and RBI opportunities. There is also some indication that he was extremely unlucky last year with a .217 BAbip.

12. Lucas Duda – New York Mets

2015 Stats: AB 471 | R 67 | H 115 | 2B 33 | 3B 0 | HR 27 | RBI 73 | SB 0 | BB 66 | SO 138 | BA .244 | OBP .352 | SLG .486 | OPS .838 | BAbip .285

Lucas Duda is the ultimate backup option. If you miss on anyone else at first base, you can always grab Duda late. Solid pick.

13. Eric Hosmer – Kansas City Royals

2015 Stats: AB 599 | R 98 | H 178 | 2B 33 | 3B 5 | HR 18 | RBI 93 | SB 7 | BB 61 | SO 108 | BA .297 | OBP .363 | SLG .459 | OPS .822 | BAbip .336

Eric Hosmer represents the depth at the first base position. He is a player that keeps getting better, and there is no reason to think he won’t continue to do so.

14. Mark Teixeira – New York Yankees

2015 Stats: AB 392 | R 57 | H 100 | 2B 22 | 3B 0 | HR 31 | RBI 79 | SB 2 | BB 59 | SO 85 | BA .255 | OBP .357 | SLG .548 | OPS .906 | BAbip .246

Just when you thought his career was coming to an end, Mark Teixeira hits 31 home runs. He should, however, see a slight decline in 2016, even with those inflated Yankees Stadium numbers.
